old VHS and Hi8's to DVD please help with advice!

Yes I realize there mite be a few threads about this but I would be very grateful if any one could provide me with answers. Basically I am looking to put all the analog video's and Hi8's (whatever they are i'm only 17) onto DVD in the house there are two computers my macbook (not pro) with 2GB ram or the PC which is currently running vista home edition with 3GB ram. As there is no capture card in the PC. What would be the cheapest way I could go about this whilst still ensuring quality? Is there say any difference in the price for software/hardware necessary to do this between the mac and the PC?

Also note that I do not have a DV camera and just for this task see no need to purchase one when my Dad's digital camera takes video clips.

Thanks for your advice!

you are going to need to be able to play the vhs and hi8 tapes and convert to dv,i cant see how the digital camera will be of use .you could record the vhs and hi8 onto a dvd recorder if you have one and dont need to edit it, without a dv cam or recorder with av in i cant see a way of recording them to dv without getting one, others may though
