8mm camcorder film onto dvd

over the last fifteen years or so i have built up a library of 20 or so films of family life on my 8mm camcorder which has now ceased to work, i would like to put all this on to dvd,s and then with the help of the computer turn them after editing into something worth watching, there would in all be about 26 hours to edit from that i would like to be able to tag each clip and use each clip maybe on different dvd,s to give to the family, could i have any suggestions as to the most economical and practical way of achieving this,
thanks gary

Re: 8mm camcorder film onto dvd

Well you need something to play the tapes so you are looking at a Video8, Hi8 or a few Digital8 camcorders.
If you get a D8 cam then make sure it can play the analogue tapes - only a few models can. These cams are few & far between now so you will probably want to go second hand (plus AFAIK none of the more up to date models play the analogue tapes). D8 has the advantage of being able to do analogue to digital conversion on the fly so you can connect it to a PC via firewire for capture direct to the PC. If captured as DV .AVI files then they will be far easier (on the PC at least) to edit and then convert and burn to DVD.

Mark.

Re: 8mm camcorder film onto dvd

There's quite some confusion about 8mm camcorder and 8mm cine film. I thought I put this threat it straight incase anyone wasted their time like me.

I have (well had) 8mm cine film and used this company in the end www.cine-to-dvd-transfer.co.uk . I did send some samples to other firms but these people seem to be the best quality for the price. They did do 8mm camcorder transfer to DVD on www.video-to-dvd.com but I havn't used them for that.

It's was quite difficult finding a firm who didn't just project your cine off a wall and then camcorder it off.

I hope this is enough input and thus would like to ask something in return. I have hundreds of 8mm cine films and about 20 Super8 films. I don't have the money to get them all done by the above company.

BIG QUESTION: does anyone know how to transfer themselves. How can I make my own home set up?
