PC can not see camcorder

I have just bought a JVC GR-D720 camcorder and wanted to put what I had on it onto DVD via my pc which is running xp home I bought a pci slot firewire card connected them up and nothing
My pc has the card installed properly but when I connect the camcorder there in nothing. I thought it would be like when you connect a USB device
Everything seems fine no conflicts, changed IRQ ports just in case, still nothing
Am I missing something? Is there any JVC software or drivers?
Any help would be appreciated

Sorry - Can't offer you a solution as I have the same problem! Have you tried JVC helpline? To be honest they weren't too helpful but you never know. Goof luck!

You shouldn't need any drivers; you do need to use software to capture (can use Windows Movie Maker). Note that the camcorder won't show up as a "drive" in Windows Explorer/My Computer, so it's not exactly like USB in that way. Have you tried to capture, and see if the capture software can see the camcorder?

The usual suspects,
dodgy cable,

PCi card not seated properly,
firewire output on camcorder .. dodgy ,
or if the PC card has more than one socket try them in turns.
In general the drivers for IEEE1394 are built into windows and no further software is required
How do you know the camcorder hasn't been recognised? Have you tried capturing?
I note what Mark says about "drive" in my computer showing or not but in my PCs it does show under "scanners and cameras"and the ping notification sound like with USB happens
See HERE
Also some camcorders have the ability to turn firewire ( dv) output on/ off in menu. More usual for hdv camcorders but worth looking for nonetheless
Good Luck, Church beckons!

Re: PC can not see camcorder

Thanx for the quick replys guys
not sure about the cable/card/camcorder having dodgy connections as they are all brand new firewire card is seated properly as it did install ok
tried to capture using the ulead 8 software I got with the card and it says no device found to capture
will have a look under "scanners and cameras" whan I finnish work
starting to get a bit frustrated with it now
