What laptop specs required to edit AVCHD video

I need some advice on buying a new laptop. I want to edit my AVCHD footage from my Sony HDR-SR7 with Sony Vegas and wanted to know what specs I need to run and edit smoothly. Apart from the obvious, i.e HD size, dvd re-writer what else should I be looking at as standard.

I currently have an Acer Travelmate LCI804 Centrino Pentium M, 1.6GHz CPU, 768MB of RAM, Firewire input.

Any Core2Duo laptop will be OK. This cam uses USB to upload not Firewire.

Re: What laptop specs required to edit AVCHD video

I would take my cue from the minimum hardware specs of the editing software you wish to use as they vary
A decent dual core Pentium with min 1Gb of RAM and a Video card perhaps with own ( not shared) memory would be a good starting point.
I would really just buy the most powerful you can afford as even with software, they tend to quote minimum hardware spec ( often a little optimistic) and recommended specs ( more real world!)
Besides you never know what future format is round the corner.. get something with a little grunt and keep ing for a while

Re: What laptop specs required to edit AVCHD video

I'm very tempted at getting myself one of these: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_...FQ5OQgod01oYMA

I'm guessing this will do the job or is there something better? I have £1000 in my budget but don't want to spend unnecessarily as I'll just be using it for editing. Could I save or do I need to spend more? I can't find the minimum hardware specs for using Vegas

my MacBook is a core 2 duo 2.1ghz with 2gb ram and a 250gb 5400rpm hard drive. It handles avchd with great ease. Though I only had access to 720p files, but nothing there in performance to suggest it won't handle 1080i with ease.

I am not saying you should get a MacBook, although it makes live easy as the camera I had yesterday was so easy literally take it out the packaging plug in USB and sync video files and edit with the standard tools. Anywayonce the codecs are sorts you should be ok.

Just buy the highest spec you can afford.
