Got the HV20 now I need a new PC?

Great camera,
Superb quality, easy to use etc. - annoying you don't get a firewire with the camera though and not even a complimentary tape.
Also bought Pinnacle Ultimate - again easy to use but getting stuttering playback whilst editing.

So I've put the stuttering down to my 1.14ghz amd processor and 1 gig of ram which looks like it's just not up to it.

This could get expensive....

Anyway thought I'd get a new processor, which will mean a new motherboard, which in turn means new memory and then I'll find, no doubt that my Radeon X800XT pe isn't up to it and my three hdd are too small, oh dear.

Anyway to kick off I thought I'd go for the ASUS P5E-VM HDMI board as the HDMI facility looks handy and then plug in a couple of gig memory and a Q6600 processor.

Your thoughts, any advice?

Bunging in a Quad processor isn't necessary unless you really want to make it expensive.

Im the meantime you could use a proxy or intermediate format to edit with as a workaround.

Sounds good, if only I knew what it meant

Can you give me a tip on how to do this?

Cheers

Re: Got the HV20 now I need a new PC?

Sure, I can explain the concept; I don't use Pinnacle so I can't tell you exactly the steps to use.

The idea of a proxy is to use a lower resolution, easier to edit format for editing. (e.g. DV-avi). So you take your HDV, and first convert it to DV. (Keeping a copy of the original HDV of course). Now, you edit the DV proxy. As it is DV, it edits easily, you can preview at full speed. Then, when you've finished your edits, you sway the proxy file(s) with the original HDV, then render. So there is no loss of quality.

An intermediate format is one which retains the high definition, but is easier to edit. Vegas for example includes the excellent Cineform codec. This is a virtually lossless codec which keeps the full resolution but is easier to edit than HDV. With an intermediate the flow is to create the intermediate, edit that, then render with it (no swapping back and forth).

Either does add extra steps, so isn't for everyone. I used both methods in the past when I had a slower PC.

If your going to be rednerind at more than 30fps then get a quad core, the fastest one you can afford, anything under 30 then a 3GHZ core2duo is fine..., but Quad core is an advantage...

Pinnacle doesnt use a proxy. Ulead video studio does. Either way a more powerful PC looks like it might be finding its way to you if you want Edit painlessly.
However HDV is not as painful edit as AVCHD and while I would always advice the most powerful PC you can afford, Most dual core PCs with 1Gb of RAM ( software permitting) should be fine, more even better

Can I have one to?...., *jokes*, already have one, but wouldn't mind a Dual Quad Core Xeon setup, it's a must for encoding HD at 60FPS...
