Sony DCR-HC44 "Use the infoLITHIUM battery pack" error

Hi, I've got an Sony DCR-HC44 with a NP-FP50 battery. I bought a 'genuine' sony NP-FP70(higher capacity) battery off ebay, it looks like a sony and came in sony packaging, but it doesn't work on the camcorder. (Camcorder instructions say it should). If I try to charge it, after 20 seconds the charging light flashes to indicate a problem. If I try to use the battery, after 20 seconds I get an error on screen "Use the infoLITHIUM battery pack" and the camcorder turns off. Is it a faulty battery, or an incompatibility?? I would assume even if it's a fake battery in sony packaging the manufacturer would at least make a battery that works?! Any ideas on this would be very useful, Many thanks, Simon.

I suspect it is a fake (non-Sony, in Sony packaging). They are quite common on ebay, especially from Hong Kong/China.

Sony keeps adding more sophisticated logic on their camcorders to spot and reject non-Sony batteries. You may find the battery you bought will work on some Sony camcorders but not others.
