that is really a good deal! Almost (not quite) would want to make me go back to a PC....No seriously, I used to love Sony Vegas for editing, getting it free with a Camera and cashback makes this a fantastic deal....Worth another bump

I heard about this cashback offer and was expecting to find something inside the box when I opened my Sony HDR-SR7. They don't exactly advertise that fact, if they did they'd sell more. I'm happy though, makes my buy a great deal at £658 with cashback.

Note that the documents you have to supply include the European Guarantee Information document, I guess that stops anyone who's bought a grey import from claiming.

Got it off an ebay seller , gen UK model with European G I D , just waiting for a sales receipt to come through before I send the form off. Just wondered if it had to be a Sony dealer / participating store etc ?

All this cash back malarkey is just a sales ploy to catch you on the hook and then wind you in, which they seem to do with many people that cannot see past the end of their nose. I agree that cash back is a sales ploy, but in this case 1) the prices of these camcorders were already competitive with similar models from other manufacturers, and 2) the offer is for a limited time. So certainly if someone was already considering buying one of these, doing it today (last day of the offer) would be a good idea. Not only the cash back but for the Vegas software.

1. This us manufacturers (or promoters) cashback. Not the retailers so that does not determine the sale price.
2. The lowering the sale price will have an effect on turnover, running a promotion does not.
3. Promotions could be seen as cost of doing business and thus potentially creating tax benefits.
4. There will always be a percentage that forget to send it in.

So considering it is illegal for the manufacturer to set the sale price they actually can share a sales bonus with the consumer using this method which otherwise the retailer could have chosen to pocket.

I could go on for a while with several arguments why this is not as bad as you seem to think it is.

Happy for you not to reply any further bit childish though to run away....But I think you mis-understand that the cashback has nothing to do with the retailer, thus if you do care to enter a debate (which is the purpose of posting on a forum...) why would the retailer who charges the end user lower their price whilst they don't get the cash back? The other elements like tax benefits etc were for your benefit so you may understand why this sales ploy is being used....Those manufacturer/promotors benefit work in a win-win situation where otherwise the price may not have been lowered.....

The point made was that from an end users angle. The end user doesn't give a monkey's where the cashback comes from, whether it be the retailer, manufacturer, you or anybody else. It is still a ploy when the cashback could be easily be taken off the price at the point of sale to the customer. The end user is not interested in anything else other than the bottom line, ie, how much have I got to pay and why won't they give the reduction on price immediately when I make the purchase, because with the so called cashback, is the bottom line. It is still called brainwashing the public and doesn't matter what label you put on it. End users are not interested in the politics of a product, ie, who gives the cashback, tax benefits, promotions etc. etc. They just want to know where they can buy at the best price. End of chat.

Well I'm glad this sales ploy brainwashed me into buying it, although think again, it didn't I wanted this model, I searched for the cheapest price from a reputable supplier and bought it, the £50 cashback and Vegas software was a great bonus for me and wasn't taken into account when buying. For others it will be and rightly so, it's a good deal just with the Vegas software. At the end of the day if the customer thinks he's had a good deal that's what matters.

I couldn't agree more, my sentiments exactly. The customer doesn't give a monkey's with regard to where the refund comes from he/she is only interested in the bottom line which of course mean's the best deal. If it's the deal that suit's you that's all that matters.

Aye, same here [the sr5, that is]...been waiting for ages for the price to drop (I was committed to buying before x-mas) and when it finally did...a double whammy an extra 50 plus Vegas . Fantastic, really. The only problem with Vegas (well, the demo) - it doesn't open m2ts files on my pc - there is some sort of bug in the software where Vegas wont recognise the files

Something similar happened to me last year with my Sony Bravia - got a sky HD box for free Hell, I was going to buy one anyway, then £150 offer from sky and £150 cashback from Sony.

I was appauled with Sony's cashback offer advertising...its almost like they dont want people to know about it....nobody in my currys knew about it, its not on the front page of the sony website, I couldn't find any info on Sony's camorder forums...it is however mentioned on the dixons website...but the link to the offer is broken

I received a letter from Sony at the beginning of Jan apologising () for the delay!!!

Then received my guarantee and receipts in the post with a copy of Vegas 7 and a £50 cheque which I will hopefully be cashing today!!

Quick, slightly off topic question.. What is the difference between Vegas 7 & 8? From what I remember reading, it had better support for avchd? Is that right?
Amazon have an offer for Vegas 8 atm and I wasn't sure if its worth paying for it when I have Vegas 7 already!

Can you confirm, is it the full "pro" version of Vegas? (If it is called "Vegas 7" than it is... as opposed to "Vegas Movie Studio").

Assuming it is the full version...

Vegas 7 has support for Sony AVCHD models. With Vegas 8 it works on non-Sony AVCHD as well. Other main features in Vegas 8 are a new advanced titler, smart rendering of HDV, and 32-Bit Floating Point Video Processing.

Also check that you have Version 7e, which is the latest (last) release of Vegas 7. If not you can download a free upgrade to 7e.
