AVCHD and PS3

Hi, I am fairly new to the HD Video camera stuff so I will say sorry now if I say something silly. I am trying to view AVCHD content on my PS3. I have a Sony HDRSR7 and have managed to transfer files from the camera using the Sony software and have managed to create AVCHD dvd which can be viewed on the PS3 if I take the disk from my computer. What I would like to be able to do is view my video over the network to my PS3 just as I can do with other video and picture content. I have tried copying the contents of the DVD to a folder in My Videos on the PC, but the PS3 does not see it, yet I am told if I move the contents to a mem stick that it will. Any ideas how I can view the AVCHD content over the network on my PS3?

Re: AVC HD writing and PSŁ

I don't think you can. In any event it would need a wired network because the bitrate would be too high for most people's wifi. Homeplug Turbo would be fast enough if you don;t fancy putting any wiring in but then again I still don't think that the PS3 streams AVCHD.

You can burn some DVD with the AVCHD footage using one of these:

Re: AVC HD writing and PSŁ

I have watched AVCHD streamed wirellessly ( albeit in the same room) from PC to PS3 more than a few times
It is possible, maybe wired is better

This was on a Vista PC though playing AVCHD, m2t, Quicktime, xvid, Divx streamed to the PS3

I am surprised though , there is no reason why you should not be able to copy hi def material to your PS3 HDD from a DVD.. It should be easy . I've done it more than a few times

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Thanks for getting back to me. The PS3 is hard wired in but the PS3 canot see the files on the PC even though it can see photos and other video, I am strugling to understand why if it can play them off a dvd/mem stick it will not work from the PC HDD.

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Do you have the latest firmware?
If it can read Hi def ( or indeed any file it supports from the DVD) it should play them ( after copying ) from its HDD without complaining TBH

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Hi, yes I have the latest fi,ware, I confirmed this with Sony yesterday. It seems odd that it will play it from the DVD but not if I copy the contents of the DVD to a folder on my PC.

Perhaps it's something to do with the odd Blu-Ray folder structure, then? 'Fraid I know less than nowt about that though.

Re: AVCHD and PS3

I think so, it is basically the contents of a AVCHD DVD created film using Sony's Picture Motion Browser.

I don't have a PS3 but was thinking of getting one to stream pictures and home video from my central server. I came across this article http://www.digital-digest.com/articl...ide_page1.html

Although the article talks about converting video to H.264 for PS3 compatibility, it shows how to use TVersity for streaming content from a PC. I think you will need a streaming server software with UPnP / DLNA. There's quite a few of them out there.

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Windows media Player, VLan Real Player ect are streaming server software
You may not need them with the PS3 though

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Use TVersity with a >54mbps G WLAN or wired. Should do the trick. AVCHD does not need to be transcoded, since it's recognized by the PS3 natively.

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Thanks Guys
I think the issues raised initially were to do with the
  • Software : media server
  • How to configure the PS3 to see a shared network folder
  • Wired vs wireless; bandwith for streaming
  • The need to use another format. not because the PS3 lacks native AVCHD support, but because smaller files might "Travel" better
  • PS3 and AVCDH discs
Sony itself later scored over Xbox 360 by not needing the media extender software ( absolutely ) and then using firmware to support wmv-HD

What many folk have done though is to buy an Ext HDD , format part of it as a FAT32 partition , simply copy the AVCHD fies and run it off the PS3 as a USB device

Re: AVCHD and PS3

Hi all,

Apologies for bringing such an old thread back from the dead - it's utterly relevant to my questions, though, so I didn't want to create a new one.

I'm trying to stream AVCHD (.mts file from Canon HF100) from my Vista PC to my PS3. I've tried various things and have managed to get the PS3 to 'see' the AVCHD files on my machine. However, when I try to play them I get the 'Unsupported Format' error.

The PS3 and desktop are on a wired LAN, so there should be no problem with capacity.

If I copy the files onto a USB stick, I can plug that into the PS3 and it plays fine.

I really want to be able to keep a library of home video footage on my PC and stream direct to the PS3 - I don't want to have to copy large files onto USB sticks whenever I want to view them on the big screen.

Has anyone managed to do this natively, without TVserity or whatever?

Thanks!
