recording in 16x9 or not?

hi
I was reading an old article in my local library, that suggested not recording in 16x9 with your camcorder as you lose quality and thats its better to use a "16x9" adaptor lens?
I've had a search for this lens but cant find any.

has anyone here ever used one of these attachments? and if so where are they available?
secondly do you lose quality with the 16x9 setting on the camcorder?(mines a sony trv 950e)
many thanks in anticipation
cheers

You can use an adapter, but there are a few points to consider. They reduce the the focus depth, meaning you have to adjust focus carefully. Cheaper glass can introduce distortion like soft edging on the frame. The better adapters are not cheap - optex make one for £470 here !

The alternative method which I use with a trv-900 equiv. is the 16x9 in camera mode. You lose the resolution of the full frame, but it's the simplest to process. The DV quality is still good, and should be even better with a high pixel cam like the trv-950.
