Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

Anyone had any trouble finding spare batteries for these camcorders?

I believe both the SD5 and SD7 use the VW-VBG130 batteries, anyone found a source for either an official spare or decent generic ones?

Owners are waiting for china to come on stream with a choice of OEM units

currently they're are only Panasonic branded available at the usual silly prices

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

I bought mine from http://www2.computeruniverse.net/default.asp

Just do a search on the battery code. It's 87 Euros which is by far the cheapest I could find when I was looking.

Computeruniverse speak English, take credit cards and even let you pay with Paypal. I can't recommend them highly enough.

May just wait a bit longer for those unbranded OEM ones to start filtering through.

No, I don't think so -- it's too big to fit inside the SD5. All the models listed have external battery location, which can take the '260' size of this battery.

It's a "compatible." The German ("Die preiswerte Alternative zum Original Panasonic Akku inklusive Ladegerät") actually uses the word "alternative" (translates as "The inexpensive alternative to the original Panasonic battery including charger"). My guess is that it either won't work, because it doesn't have the Panasonic chip, or there's some kind of annoying work-around.

The fact that it comes with its own charger is a bit of a give-away. If it doesn't work in the Panasonic charger, there's something different about it.

yeah it comes with a charger but does that mean it wont fit into the camera`s battery compartment
this is really strange , any other SD5 owners out there plumped for a cheap import yet ?

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

Bearing in mind that the SD9 and SD5 take the same stock battery (VBG130), take a look at this thread from the SimplyDV bulletin board: http://www.simplydv.co.uk/simplyBB/v...p?f=33&t=20802

i can`t thank you enough for your infomation , i`ll probably plump for a genuine battery from jessops as the time i take to order a cheapo and for it to arrive and then probably be useless i`ll have a proper one from jessops in my possession and i do need one as my SD5 aint got a battery and i`m itching to test it out

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

Computer Universe (mentioned above in this thread) has the VBG-130 in stock according to its website, for about 68 quid including postage: http://www2.computeruniverse.net/pro...30e-k-akku.asp. Works out a few quid dearer than Jessops (I think Jessops charge 4 quid for postage) but might be worth contacting CU to see how quickly they can deliver. Looks like they're based in Germany.

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

jessops are £59.99 but i have found a 5% off voucher on a voucher site plus they are doing free delivery on orders over £50 so i might as well do that and wait til it arrives

one other thing i have noticed by cross referencing is that the CGU12 is a similar battery so would this work even though its only rated at 720mah

CGU Dims - 41 X 36 X 17
VGB130 Dims - 40 x 33 x 22

i`m probs just clutching at straws here in tryin to get a cheaper alternative , i am popping into my local jessops tomorrow as they just night have a battery in stock

It's cheap, but because it isn't chipped like a genuine Panasonic battery, all the caveats discussed above still apply.

Hi, sorry to crash the thread but have been wondering about this for my own SD5. Tried to buy a knock-off battery in HK on honeymoon in Aug but was told flatly that you need the original (which was no cheaper there)

What I'm thinking (and this won't be for everyone) is whether I can make a battery pack that I can plug the DC lead into - the one that goes to the charger to allow AC->DC power - anyone tried this?

I think even if I get a second battery for the camera it still won't last as long as I want it to and as I'm thinking of using it on the slopes, where the battery life is reduced hugely - If I can have a battery pack inside my jacket cabled up to the camera.....

Thoughts?

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

Just received 2 'non-OEM' batteries via a seller on eBay. They do not work. The camera comes up with a message saying it cannot use the battery.

It is an HDC-SD9.

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

After endless searching & research and trawling through forums upon forums

I’ve decide to go for the original battery I’ve put my name down on the waiting list at campkins in Cambridge.

I have also ordered one from Techstore

Panasonic VW-VBG130 - Panasonic VW-VBG130 Battery for HD Camcorders

based in Greater London I called them up and someone answered straightaway they did say it will take 2 weeks thou.

both places almost the same price charge around £60 with delivery

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

Just to let you know that the Battery I ordered from Techstore arrived on Friday so that only took 4 days

Not bad when compared to Jessops website which says 28days.

The Battery is a Genuine panasonic part.

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

Just for the record, I bought a battery case and some simple bits and pieces to try supplying my SD5 with power through the charger's AC/DC cable.... (for those who don't know its a battery shaped adaptor which slots into the camera in place of the battery with an attached lead which plugs in to the battery charger.

I bought a 6 AA battery cage and wires and linked it to the cable..... The camera powered up into record mode, seemed about to work and then popped up the 'this battery cannot be used' message.... Interestingly in playback mode it worked fine.

So, my grand plan of having a battery belt with a cable to the camera has to bite the dust - seems that there must be a chip in the charger too....

It must be different from the SD1. That just uses a 2 pole +/- jack into the side of the camera that works fine with external batteries.
Panasonic really do seem desperate to retain their battery revenue, trivial though it must be compared to revenue from the real hardware. Appalling, and hard luck.

Re: Panasonic HDC-SD5 or SD7 spare battery?

A '260' battery won't fit into the SD5 (although it will fit the SD9).
For the SD5, it has to be the '130' size, because of the internal battery compartment.
