AVCHD files play on a PS3?

Hi, i have just got myself a sony HDR-CX6EK (and im really enjoying it)and im now looking at picking up a PS3 to play back AVCHD discs. My question is,on the 60gb version of the PS3 it has SD card slots. Can these slots read directly from my Pro duo memory stick i use in my camcorder and if so,will it be in high def?

Thanx all for any help guys

Yes the PS3 will play the AVCHD direct from the memory card in high def; as long as you have current firmware.

Re: AVCHD files play on a PS3?

Dont forget too that if you have a PC with a wireless router and set up your network to have your videos in a shared folder, you can stream them from the PC to the PS3 for playback on your HDTV. You can of course do this wired.
The PS3 can act as a networked media player in addition to playing of the card or its own internal HDD
This applies to all supported files ( mpeg2, m2t, avchd, Quicktime HD) but not to WMV-HD. I have watched Some BBC HD, US HDTV ( Heroes) ect Hi def footage this way.. very nice. Some had been encoded to Xvid, Divx 5, mpeg 1080i, with varying levels of compression but even viewed on a 42" Sony Bravia LCD they looked very tasty even compared to BluRay which was the Doggies whatits!

A wireless connection is not up to coping with HD bandwidth needs, you'll need a wired connection. It will work, but will stutter.

It works ( very well) in my house ,
However it is perhaps dependent on the strength of the wireless "signal" , not so much HD bandwith needs alone
We seem to get the mandatory 4-5 bars ( max) with the Netgear Supermax Router, on all 3 PCs on the network
Still as you say, wired networks are more dependable if somewhat inelegant

PS:The said files can also be "read" off a data DVD in the PS3s Optical Drive

Re: AVCHD files play on a PS3?

We have been looking at buying a HDR-CX6EK, but are currently waiting to get Christmas out of the way first, and maybe save a few quid.

On the Sony mini-site for the HDR-CX6EK they list that the Memory Stick duo can be taken out of the HDR-CX6EK and played back from the PS3. Apart from the good reviews the Sony has got, my biggest reason for getting it was because it's easy to playback.

I too have a nice little wireless network setup, and can stream HD footage without any stutter at all, but it's nice being able to just plug in and go!

However, my attention has since turned to the Panasonic HDC-SD5EG-K which looks smaller, and is newer, has got equally (if not better reviews) than the Sony, and is cheaper. It also comes with a 4gb card.

I notice that it also records using AVCHD, but cannot find any mention on wheter the PS3 will play AVCHD from an SD card.

Does anyone know if it will?

Many thanks in advance,

TS

No, the first 2 posts are about playing footage recorded on the Sony Camcorder, from the MS slot. My question is regarding playing footage recorded by the Panasonic from the SD slot.

Re: AVCHD files play on a PS3?

It's a fair question, as the Panasonic implementation of AVCHD is slightly different (as evidence by the first releases of Sony's Vegas editing software only supported Sony AVCHD). But I have seen people report that yes, they have successfully played Panasonic AVCHD direct from the SDHC card.

If we have any Panasonic AVCHD owners with a PS3 here they should be able to confirm.

Thats great, thanks for your reply RedSox_Mark. In theory I can't see any reason why it shouldn't, but as you say, there are slight differences.

I can find various refs. to this, of which I was not aware. It seems to mean AVCHD isn't a very well defined standard. No wonder there are problems. I'd love to know what the detailed differences are, but haven't dug this out from anywhere yet.
