Preimer won't capture 16x9 correctly from DV

I'm having a heck of a problem with my Sharp WD450U with it's 16x9. I have always recorded all my video in 16x9. However when I try to upload them via any capturing programs (movie maker, Premier, etc) things look stretched and crushed a bit. This has to be a simple setting fix but in all the years I've had this camera I've never tried to actually upload them until recently. I've messed with a few settings in premier but everything that seems could help is grayed out for me in capture settings, such as Pixel aspect ratio.

I did take a friends video that he shot at my wedding with his camera that also had a recording in 16x9 feature and when I went to capture that off my camera it didn't have the stretch affect. That's where I really get confused.

Thanks guys... really appreciate the tips here.

I don't know that camcorder, but it sounds like it's widescreen mode might not be "real" widescreen. With some camcorders, the widescreen just places a widescreen image within the 4:3 frame (so you lose resolution). If this is the case you need to convert it to true widescreen in software. In Vegas I would use Pan/Crop, right-mouse-button click in the cropping frame and choose "match output aspect". Hopefully someone can tell you how to do that in Premiere.

Sounds like my old Hi8 Canon, my last tape based device! I got so frustrated with the loss of resolution that I bought an enormous secondhand Kowa anamorphic lens and strapped it onto the front. Weighed a ton and it had to be focussed separately, but at least the resolution was better.

I'd go with Mark probably not true widescreen cos if you open a new project in premeire and choose wide screen you get it if its there .You could ask on their users forum
