Light tripod OK for smooth pans?

I want to get a decent tripod that will give smooth pans and I am immediately drawn to the velbon dv-7000. This seems to be well recommended and is currently available from jessops for £63, but the 3.5kg weight sounds mighty heavy to carry around. The Velbon CX range still have fluid heads and are much lighter, but does the lack of weight compromise the panning ability? Does anyone have any experience of these lighter tripods? It will be used with a Canon hv20. Thanks.

Re: Light tripod OK for smooth pans?

I don't know about the Velbon CX tripods, but I use a relatively cheap Jessops TP323. I find it great for a light cam, and very smooth, but it isn't fluid filled, and not really in the same league as the DV-7000 (although I really do find the 'lower league' all I need for a light cam!). I've also got a Velbon monopod which is fantastic (but doesn't have pan). You're probably best to try and get to a shop to try them and see how they feel to you...

Re: Light tripod OK for smooth pans?

The CX is pretty good for a cheap lightweight tripod. There is a tradeoff; the heavier DV-7000 gives you a more solid base, so less likely that you get any non-smooth movement (i.e. not having the base of the tripod move a bit when you pan). You can get both strength and less weight in the legs by going with expensive carbon fibre legs… but in cheaper models you will trade off some stability for lower weight.

Re: Light tripod OK for smooth pans?

Thanks for your input guys. I had a look in Jessops yesterday and (as mentioned elsewhere) they didn't have much variety. If I order online and go for store collection, can I choose not to buy after looking it over?

Actually this may be a moot point - the DV7000 seems to have gone up to £99 now, should have gone for it last night. Damn.
