Canon MD101 vs Sony DCR-HC27 (Mini DV)

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me

I'm looking to enter the camcorder world and have narrowed my choice down to the 2 above-mentioned models for basic day-to-day recordings (family, pets etc.).

From what I can gather, the only major difference between the two is the fact that the Canon offers 16:9 recording, and the Sony doesn't. Is this a handy feature? (I have a fairly standard Toshiba CRT TV with 16:9 picture compression & black bars).

I'm erring towards the Sony as it has a separate charger, Carl Zeiss lens and is apparently better indoors. They're around the same price.

Thanks for any input.

Yes the Canon is true widescreen... which means better quality if shooting widescreen. If in future you get a widescreen TV and want to shoot widescreen this makes a difference.

Also the Canon has an external microphone input.

I would get the Canon.
