Windows XP not recognising Camcorder via Firewire

I have 2 computers both with XP SP2 installed. Neither of them recognise my Sony HDR-HC3 when it is plugged in via Firewire.
I tried it into my Mac Mini and it worked perfectly first time. I managed to capture from camcorder and control it from Mac's iMovie software which came with the computer.
So there is nothing wrong with the camcorder or the lead.
It's Windows XP which is at fault.
Damn Microsoft and their crappy software to hell!
Can anyone help, please?

Re: Windows XP not recognising Camcorder via Firewire

If you go into "My Network Places" and "View Network connections" you should see an icon "1394 Connection", it should be shown as connected and not disabled etc. If disabled, right click and enable.

No. Not in network connections, it is not. I specifically disabled it because advice on the 'net was to disable it.
It didn't work when it was enabled [edit] and it didn't work when I re-enabled it now.

Re: Windows XP not recognising Camcorder via Firewire

Never had this problem, it seems strange you are getting on two PC's, every PC that I have connected Firewire to, be it XP or Vista (6-8 PC's) it has worked perfect.

What software are you using on the PC? Just plugging in will not help.

Cyberlink Power Director. I would have thought that simply switching the camera into playback mode when connected would bring up a plug and play window in Windows.

Yes it should do. But it doesn't. Could it be the Service Pack 2 1394 drivers?

Re: Windows XP not recognising Camcorder via Firewire

Is it failing in both DV and HDV output modes?
For HDV with XP you need SP2 (or do additional config to install the drivers). In DV mode it should work regardless of SP level. Note the device shows up differently depending on the mode; in HDV mode it is a "Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit Device".

Haven't tried it in anything but HD mode.

Re: Windows XP not recognising Camcorder via Firewire

Maybe this post will help...
http://www.avforums.com/forums/showp...94&postcount=2

If you try it in DV mode it may help narrow it down. If it works in DV mode then it is likely an issue with the AV/C subunit driver needed for HDV. If DV doesn't work either, then it seems a more basic failure with your firewire port.
