Complete newbie seeks basic advice

Hi everybody, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for my first camera. I don't have a clue as to even what format I'm looking for, I want the camera to take films of my kids on holiday primarily, so I won't be able to download anything for a couple of weeks. After that I'm not really worried about bells and whistles etc, just price!

Sorry if this seems a bit of a basic question, but I genuinely don't have a clue and any advice will be appreciated!
