Recommendations for transferring vhs video to digital

Hi everyone,

First post so please be patient

I'm thinking of learning how to transfer vhs video to dvd just as a bit of a hobby at first so don't want to spend too much money out just yet. From what I've read so far, I'll need a MiniDV camcorder that has a "pass through" feature on it so that it can convert the analogue signal to digital to enable me to use the files on my mac.

So with that in mind can anyone give me any recommendations/ideas that isn't going to cost too much.

Let me know if you need any further info

Thanks

Re: Recommendations for transferring vhs video to digital

Yes, you can do it that way. Alternatively, you could use a PC with a TV Card that is equipped with a capture function. Simply connect the video cable from the VCR to the capture card and connect to a suitable software and Bob's your uncle.

Most EU camcorders have the A to D converter and the VCR functions crippled (or missing) due to an anachronistic, protectionist tax on VCRs.

You could buy a VHS/DVD recorder and record straight to DVD then rip the DVD to your computer, I believe these can be bought fairly cheaply.

Models with AV input are hard to find these days; if you can still find a Sony HC96 (ebuyer had them) that is a good choice.

Or you can buy a dedicated box which will capture DV like http://www.dv247.com/invt/23453

Set top DVD recorder is the easiest way.

Re: Recommendations for transferring vhs video to digital

Thanks for the help everyone,

I already have a pretty decent Sony video so I've had a look around for a dvd recorder and come across this one. Will this be good enough?

The first one for £79.01

I'm a little bit uncertain about this site as everything seems so cheap!?! It has that little digital guy from the ads but that doesn't mean much - has anyone had any dealings with them?

Thanks
Saboo

Re: Recommendations for transferring vhs video to digital

If you are going to buy a DVDR then I should at least get one that has a Freeview tuner. If you live in Whitehaven your analogue went off tonight....

It's hard to tell if that DVDR will do what you want but TBH I expect it will. See if you can download a manual just to make sure.
