.avi got a problem for you...

Hi,
Trying to save a video file (filmed on camcorder on Mini DV tape) which has been transferred to my PC. It's being stored as an .avi file by the editing software (Motion DV Studio). Problem burning this to CD in my DVD-RW as RealPlayer and Windows Media Player burning features don't recognise .avi files. Does anyone have a solution? Is there a free downloadable burner out there which will allow me to burn my .avi file onto cd-rom?
Thanks
Chris

Re: .avi got a problem for you...

Which kind of file is it? " avi" is not a file format, There is DV AVI, and several of the mpeg4 files have avi

You dont need special software to burn an *.avi to a CD but depending on your system you do need the right codec to play it back
The usual download from MiniDV tape is an AVI, , DV AVI but at 13Gb per hr even 15 mins of it would not fit on a CD

Real player and Windows media should recognise the files but not if you don't have the right codec
Try playing them with
VLC or GOM player

Re: .avi got a problem for you...

What do you want to do with the file ?? Are you just backing up the file to CD ? If so Nero would do that -treat it as data. Do you want to watch it on a home player ?? Why use CD ?? A DVD is better quality for watching .But first you will have to encode it . An [DV].avi could be a big file ,to big to put onto a DVD let alone a CD . What file size is it ?? . Software to do this !! some of the guy's on the forum will inform you about free software to encode , I , like many other's use Pinnacle , this will capture ,edit and then write directly to a DVD . But ,there are many other programs to use ,but most are not free. I think we need abit more info as to what you intend to do with the file .

Hoping to copy to CDR to play back on someone else's PC. It's a 17 min video clip and as an .avi it occupies 3.55GB (yes, GB!!!) My PC has a DVD-RW but I only have CD-Rs available. I tried to upload the video using Pinnacle but (even though the USB device i.e. camcorder) was recognised Pinnacle was failing to display the incoming video stream - just a blank image instead. So I gave up and used Motion DV Studio instead. If I convert to another file format I wonder if the file will be compressed enough to allow it to fit on a 700MB CD-R ?
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Re: .avi got a problem for you...

You seem to have got DV .AVI files off the camcorder - but you are going about it in the wrong way. USB will not get the best possible PQ off the cam. To get best PQ you must use firewire instead.
To then burn to a CD you can use any burning software such as Nero (or whatever bundled software came with the DVD burner). Just create the disc as a VCD or SVCD (better PQ). But due to the high levels of compression you will loose a fair bit more PQ.

Mark.

Re: .avi got a problem for you...

Better still, just buy a couple of Blank DVD disc, less than 20p each.. and then there a cheap external HDDs

Motion DV and USB !
Use firewire .. easy :
3.5gb for 17 min sounds like a DV AVI
Also If and when you copy the file.. dont try to play it off the DVD.. copy it to your HDD first
