JVC Camcorder faulty: repair or buy a new one?

Hi there

My son has a JVC MiniDV camcorder about 3 years old. Hes currently doing A level photography and is doing film as a module.(other modules are still photography, technques, lightining etc.). Unfortunately his JVC has developed a fault whereby it powers up but wont playback or record anything. He needs is sorting out soon as he needs to do some work with it.

Is is worth (consdering the age of the camcorder) a replacement or getting it fixed? If fixed is the option, where is a good place (in Sussex) to get it repaired. Or suggest a way of diy fixing!!! If replacement is the option, recommend me a MinDV camcorder for about 150-200 quid!

Sorry I dont know the model number of the JVC but I will try to find out.

Thanks again

If it is one of these, you are in luck
http://www.which.co.uk/reports_and_c..._557_92927.jsp

Otherwise, probably not worth repairing.

My suggestion for a good budget model is the Canon MD101. Popular with schools doing film study due to the price, good quality, and has an external mic input. Only downside is some units the motor noise is an issue (but not if you use an external mic).

Others have suggested the JVC GRD760/770.

If you are going to contact JVC make sure that it is just a record fault. If it is able to playback older tapes then it is possible that it is the fault covered on the Which and JVC site and you might get some help if you have a receipt.

Standard MiniDV camcorders do not cost a lot of money imho and with this in mind, if i were in your shoes, i would replace the camera for this purpose.

Strangely JVC (!!), Cannon (a bit pricey) and some older Panasonic MiniDV have received good reviews over the last 12 months.

Why strange? JVC has shift ring fortunes but Canon and Panasonic have been fairly consistent in making good camcorders .. If you are talking of Pricey.. that is Sony!
Speaking of which.. is your Everio still in service??
