Lightbulb How much motor noise does your HD camcorder pick up ?

I am looking at the benefits/drawbacks of the new HD fprmats (tape, hard disk, flash memory) and so what does the mike pick up.
My current camcorder is a Sony DCrPC105 - excellent flexibility but you get the hiss of the tape mechanism

Is this the same in your HC7 ??
What about hard disk models ?
I expect the flash memeory camers are silent = is this so ?

Thanks

Yes, flash memory cams are silent.

I had a noisy HV10; I have had an HDR-HC1e that was nice and quiet.

Re: How much motor noise does your HD camcorder pick up ?

While SD flash models have no motors.. Mics picking up motor noise is model specific ( and maybe a faulty individual one)

It happens ..
Unless in dead silent environment should not be an issue and where available not picked by external mics
If recording in a very silent environment, during editing audio can be muted or replaced
Otherwise most ambient sounds tend to be louder than the motor sounds

That's true, but for guys like felix2, who takes a lot of video in his silent cell, an SD camcorder does make a nice quiet alternative.

rhubarbe, I'm surprised you heard the motor noise on your HV10 at all over your heavy breathing you told us about!!

Actually seriously I haven't had any problems with motor noise on the HC7, but haven't really tested it properly yet. I'll try to give it a go in my cell (!) and with different mics some time this week and report back.
