Unhappy Is my camcorder outdated? -or can i fix it?

Hey there , this is my first post, so i just wanna say hi to everyone... as cheesy as that looks as i write it

Anyways yesterday i dug out my old Sony DC-TRV14E from the attic along with all the cables and what not. I really wanted to drag all the old home movies of the kids onto movie maker and maybe do a lil bit of editing.

When i plugged the camcorder in the USB cable it recognized it but said that there needed to be some new software to be installed to update it. I went along to sonys website downloaded the software and restarted my computer. Then when i put my camcorder in i recognized it and the before the software started installing, it claimed that the software i needed didnt have a license or was expired or something, and that accepting may lead to viruses etc. So i didnt accept the program and now dont have any home movies on my computer ,

Should i have trusted Sonys software because they are a reliable company?
And is there anything that can recognize my old camcorder, and help me resurect our old movies

Thanks alot

Well the Sony software won't do any harm... but the USB connection will be for stills from the memory card only. To copy from tape you need to use the Firewire connection. You won't need any special drivers for it.
