Overloading internal mic?

Hi
Is it possible to overload the internal mic on Mini-DV camcorders?
When I playback live band footage recorded at close range in 16 bit,the mic seems to be overloading in areas.
To get a camcorder with manual record level gets a bit pricey and I'm happy
with the picture on the Canon.
Any help appreciated.
Dan

Re: Auto rec level Canon MD101

Oh well,not to worry.
I read on a similar post here of a sound & lighting guy wanting to video
the production he's working on so found that useful.
Suggestion was to either use a an external condenser mic although I'd
still have no record level control or to record audio seperately.
I have a Sony portable MD player/recorder + mic and also a Yamaha
AW1600 hard disk recorder so could record the audio on either of these
and have manual record level control.
