Thanks: Gave 0, Got 0 | How much could I sell this for?
Hi
I am thinking about buying a new Canon HV20 Camcorder of Ebay for around £500. I am only 16 and currently don't have enough money.
At the moment I am using a Sony DCR TRV 240E. How much money do you think I would get if I sold this camcorder which I have had for a few years but is in excellent condition(no problems at all and only a few scratches) along with an extra battery which I paid £90 for, Pinnacle Studio 9 PLus, Pinnacle Studio 10 Upgrade, Pinnacle Studio PRemium DVD which at the time I paid £100 for, Ulead Video Studio 10 and the cables neccassary to hook it up to a TV?
Another question. On Ebay some of the HV20 camcorders were originally bough from Japan and are NTSC. Being in the UK, will these camcorders work properly with my Computer and when I burn the footage to a DVD will it work on my DVD player/DVD?
Thanks

I'm not sure how much you can get for your camcorder.
As for NTSC models; no problem capturing or editing video on your PC. Also no problem playing on a HDTV. Playing on a SDTV can be a problem. If you are creating SD DVDs, you could either create NTSC ones (which play on most PAL DVD players and TVs), or convert to PAL in software.

OK, So if I convert the NTSC footage to PAL it will remain same quality? Also would you recommend me buying the NTSC version if I am going to save £50?
How much would you recommend me starting my camcorder bid at?
Thanks

If you stick with HD, then there is no need to convert. But if you don’t have a HDTV and planning to create SD DVDs… you get the main hit in quality by doing the downconversion to SD… converting to NTSC SD rather than PAL SD doesn’t make much difference, as long as the software handles the frame rate conversion well.
If you want to watch on a SD tv or make SD DVDs for now, then I recommend a PAL model rather than NTSC.

To be honest I cant see much of a market for your old Digital 8 camcorder and you struggle to get much for it.
S/H more recent DV models can be pickep up for well under £100. Might be better keeping it or stick it on auction site and see if it generates any interest.
Good luck.

Hi
I woud save £180 If I bought the NTSC version. Would you do this? Is NTSC inferior to PAL?
My PC is fully HD including the monitor and most of the movies would play of the PC, only a few would be playing on my DVD player. Can this camcorder film in SD? If I know that this is going to be intended to a wide audience who have SD TV's would I film in SD?
Final verdict: go for NTSC otherwise I won't be able to get it at all as I don't have the extra cash?
Oh and one more thing, there is a plugin for After Effects that professionally converts NTSC to PAL and the other way around. Would this retain all the quality?
Thanks for all your help

I'm going to buy an HV20 from one of the sellers on eBay. I bought my HDC-SD7 from him and he is excellent. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-CANON-IVIS...QQcmdZViewItem
I have an HTPC connected to my HDTV. If I didn't have an HDTV and an HD source I don't know that I'd bother with the HV20,

Thanks for all your help | In that case, yes get the NTSC.
You can film in SD, but you probably don't want to. Even if it is something you want to give to friends... shoot in HD then downconvert (either in software or in the camera). Most people can play SD NTSC discs, and if not converting in software is an option. I've not used After Effects but I'd think it would do a good job.
