adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

I wanted to start my video of a route 66 trip with a map of USA and our route appearing on the map from Chicago to LA, is there a way to do this so its sort of animated on the map ? many thanks

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

There may be other ways but if you make a no of stills ( in say Photoshop or other image editior) which are sequential in which your "car" starts in Chicago and ends in LA then import them into Ulead VS and put them in order into a video track.. they should be "animated" depending on how fast you make them ( a bit like a pack of cards showing an animated sequence brought to life by the flicking)

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

I might be wrong here ,but I read somewhere you can plot a course using GoogleEarth .If it shows an animated course you could capture it .I captured the zoom out from a holiday destination in Teneriffe to the Earth as a small planet .It looked quite good , it was just an experiment to show it could be done .It was saved as a .avi file and edited .Theres lots of software to do this [capture ,I mean].

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

This would be really simple to acheive in Flash as well. You would just need to import a high resoluton photo of the map, or a screengrab from googlemaps (the satellite shot would look really good) and pan around it a bit. You can then export it as an avi. Problem is that Flash is expensive and a bit tricky to get your head around, but there are cut down shareware applications that do the same sort of thing. have a look here for some examples.

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

I think the program was called CamStudio , I still have it somewhere on a disk .This is a free program that will allow you to capture a full screen , window , or part of a screen and it will save as an .avi or .swf [if you wanted to put it up on a webpage]. The zoom out was a bit stuttery but still looked good . I edited the capture with Vegas .If I have time I'll put it up on one of my sites this weekend for you to see .I'll send you an addy as a PM.

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

The way I've accomplished this technique before is by having two images of a map, one of just the map (A) and the other with the route drawn on (B). Then using a 'reveal' transition have (B) appear over (A), giving the effect of the route being highlighted (tweaking the direction of the reveal). I'm not sure whether you have this function in ULEAD 10 however, and I hope what I've wrote makes sense.

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

If your route doesn't backtrack (which is the case with route 66) then transitioning from a map without the line to one with it is an easy and effective method.

I've also used this free software to draw the map
http://www.chienworks.com/software/mapliner/
It creates a set of still images as the output; you can pull these into the editor (set the stills length to be .04 seconds per frame).

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

Hi I downloaded the chein mapliner , it looks good !
I opened my map, put the lines on and then rendered it, saved it then, tried to open it in my ulead but it would not let me ?
when i rendered it with chein, i clicked preveiw and it was a animated line been drawn on the map and it looked really good, but how do i get it from Chein to my uLlead ? can i just import it as the animated map with the line been drawn on ? many thanks

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

When you render, it asks you to select a directory, and there is a box where you type in a file name.

It will create a .bmp file for every frame, automatically naming them (e.g. if your base name is route, you will have route0000.bmp, route0001.bmp, etc.). It creates 25 of these per second (if set to PAL). You need to select all these images and add them as still images (with duration of 1/25th of a second, or 0.04 seconds). I don't use Ulead so I can't tell you exactly how, but I'm sure you can add still images, and that you can set the length of the stills to any value.

Re: adding a map to videos of route 66 ?

Hi got them in my uLead, i tried to select them all and change the length of each still but it would not let me ? So i tried to change them to 0.4 but it only lets you change them fromm 0.0 when you get to 0.24 it jumps up to 1.0 which is a bit strange ? any ideas . I found that i dont need a transition between each one ,
what size would the ideal map be ? is it best to get the largest and crop it to 720 576 pixals for widescreen and should the picture fill the whole screen ?
