Unhappy Need a tape repair service!

Hi there

After many years, I've finally got the time and equipment to convert boxes of old Video 8, Hi8, and Mini DV camcorder footage onto DVD.

I have found two old Hi8 tapes dating back to the late '90's where at some point the tape has spewed from the cassette and got twisted and kinked etc.

I see from a quick Google search that there are various places to get them repaired and/or backed up, but at circa 25 quid a pop, it's not cheap!

Does anyone have any recommendations for repair services that they have used?

Many thanks
John

Re: Need a tape repair service!

In my experience damage to a tape is due to a fault with the playing device rather than the cassette itself. therefore with a bit of luck you should still be able to play back the damaged tape. You will of course not get a clean replay of the damaged section of the tape.
If however the case is damaged then I suggest you try putting the tape into a different cassette case to see if you can get it to play. I have done this many times in the past with VHS and assume you can do it with the camcorder tapes - it will just be a lot more fiddly.

Mark.
