help please re replacing sony trv950e

hi
my car was recently broken into and my sony trv950e camcorder was stolen,

my insurance company have just sent me a note to say that as the trv950e is discontinued the nearest equvalent is the sony trv270e which they say retails at £249 so they are offering me £199 less the excess £50.

surely thats not the equivalent model?

many thanks indeed

cheers

Re: help please re replacing sony trv950e

Looks like their method is to find the model with the most letters in common in it's name... i.e. they both start with TRV.....

It's hard when replacing older camcorders as models and technology have been changing so much.. but clearly offering you the TRV270 (a basic Digital 8 model) as a replacement for a 3 CCD, miniDV TRV950 is not the right answer.

You could argue that the Sony VX2100 is closer, but that's going too high (they won't give you the £2000 or so that a VX2100 costs).

I think you could maybe argue a Panasonic GS500 would make a fair replacement (these cost around £700-800). Then you could instead buy a High Def cam like a Canon HV20 or Sony HC7... or others....

As Mark has said, the TVR950 is a well specified 3CCD MiniDV model , ( most definitely not a basic Digital8 ).. Sonys naming notwithstanding

If you cant get them to get you a VX2100.. unlikely.. try a Canon XM2 , failing that one of the Panasonics..GS 500 at least . or Sonys HDV HC7 or Canon HV 10 or 20
Although the last 3 examples are not 3CCD, they are quite Good quality Hi def models which will work with your existing tapes, can be used as SD models and have a few features nearer the 950 ...anything less.. ask for the money and go shopping yourself

Re: help please re replacing sony trv950e

Just to say I agree with Mark and Senu. The Sony TRV950 was a great camera, and probably never bettered in its class. Trouble is that 'class' doesn't seem to exist any more, but they should be covering enough to replace with an HC7 / HV20 or similar. (Or suitable money towards a VX2100 if you wanted something bigger.) If I remember correctly, the 950 was over a grand when new (a few years back), and although technology's changing rapidly, prices haven't fallen that far! Just for interest, may be worth your looking at 2nd hand (ebay) prices of 950s to compare with 2nd hand prices of TRV2** Digital 8 cameras to give you some idea of the comparison. I've still got a trusty TRV245 that I like, but it's not half of a TRV950!

Re: help please re replacing sony trv950e

My TRV-900e cost me around £1600 back in 1999. The TRV-950 was the direct replacement for my camcorder and sold for about the same price. Therefore if your policy offers 'new for old cover' then you should get around £1500 from them including the £50 excess deduction.
The TRV-900/950 were high end prosumer models and definately not entry level consumer models.

Mark.
