Thanks: Gave 32, Got 15 | Canon TX1
I have recently bought one of these and my video clips will not play through Windows XP media or burn onto cd via this either.
I do not want to do any editing or add titles or anything, just to put clips onto a cd or dvd the easiest way possible.
The camera records in AVI Motion jpeg (whatever that means!).
Is there a reason that windows will not handle it or do I need extra software?
Thanks for any help.
Ted.

You dont want a lesson in video formats. !!
AVI is what the file reads as
AVI is not a format as such
The format is determined by the codec by which the file is made
Therefore, mjpeg, Divx, mpeg4, xvid, and DV AVI all have the AVI suffix but they are different
As I stated in your other thread m-jpeg is a compact format which was not meant to be edited
Windows in its native state may not have the right codec to replay it without installing a codec for it ( such as the VLC/GOM player linked in those threads)
Also as I stated in that post... Ditch the Windows XP CD burning Plug-in and try using better burning software

Are you stalking me?
I posted here as you rightly said it was more of a video issue.
Which software is easiest to use without lots of silly add ons I will never use?

They just seem to want to play the clips from my computer.
I want to put them onto a disc.

That isnt right: you should be able to play clips from anywhere
Even a USB key or External HDD
Whilst the Players will navigate you to your HDD by default, you can navigate to the CD from within them
Also
You can select the clips on a CD, Right click and chose.. play with.. then select any player ( other than WMP)
Having a few more codecs on your system isn't nessesarily equal to bloat ware

What I meant was, they are players of clips and not burners.
I need something to transfer my clips from my computer onto dvd/cd and my Windows XP will not do this as it did with my last camera.

I understand you and was reffering to the 2 issues separately
As I understand it,The video clips from the TX1 are M-jpegs which do not readily play in WMP.
As such I suggested the other Players with the hope that by installing them you can get the right codecs on your PCs Windows system which will them enable WMP play them
I also suggested you get a copy of Nero or Roxio ( Popular CD/ DVD burning) software) to enable you burn the Clips on to a CD rather than rely on the Built-in Windows CD burning program
Also having made a CD , I would imagine they should play off the CD

Cheers.
codecs were mentioned on the site but didn't know what they were.
I will add as many as I can and go from there.
As you said, I will get Nero/Roxio if that fails.
Thanks, as no doubt you may have gathered, this is all Greek to me!

Dont worry ...even Greek can be learnt
but be aware
Codecs are small software programs which allow the encoding and decoding of files ( usually Audio or video media files) by The Media player ( or encoder)
For instance , without the right codec ,Windows media player may be able to play wma ( windows media audio format) but not MP3s. In the same way, WMP will not play a DVD video without an mpeg2 codec present on the system. The video files on a DVD video are encoded as mpeg2 ( another one of the many video file formats )
The Burning Software programs are totally a separate issue: their job is to allow you easily get the video clips onto CD or DVD without neding to rely on Windows XPs very basic and cut down CD burning facility
Try not to mix the issues; You can get to play the files with the right codec and still have CD burning problems, or not get the files playing well but be able to easily burn them to CD :So treat the issues as separate

Is the best route to just get burning software then (Nero) and just watch the clips off dvd/cd?

Ted. | There is no "best" route. You can just as easily keep the clips on your PCs HDD, an External HDD but for portability and playback away from your home setup you would then be better off burning the clips to optical discs :CD or DVD
One of the advantages of the "proper" camcorders is that even if editing is not a consideration, the format they record in is more easily turned into Full resolution DVD Videos played off a settop DVD player and watched on a TV or similar display
You can also connect up your TX1 to a Settop DVD recorder via its video output: This would give you standard DVD videos ( even if the quality is of variable quality ) similarly playable to a TV
I know it ( the TX1) does HD of sorts but how these clips will look at their resolution with that format encoded to DVD video Im not so sure:
As I said in an earlier post it seems its video was mainly meant to be viewed on a PC
