Sadly, my Sony HC39e has had to see the bottom of my dustbin this week due to the flip out screen failing, and then three days later, the whole thing packing up. I am now in the market for a replacement and have noticed the Sony DCR HC96e on sale at £344.00. I know this is discontinued and I can live with that, as it seems to get such cracking reviews picture wise. This is the most important aspect for me plus the widescreen ability. Before I take the plunge, could anyone recommend a model of similar quality and price. I worked for Sony many moons ago and have always liked their camcorders, but this last experience has left a slightly bitter taste.

HC96 is excellent and hard to do better for that price.
If you want to avoid Sony look at the Panasonic GS230 or GS320 as alternate choices.
