A mate of mine works at JVC and can get great deals on anything JVC. I was looking at the Sony DCR-SR52E but apparently it doesn't work with a Mac... this is what the reviews on Amazon state and many people have returned them.

Typically I could buy a JVC camcorder at half price but I have no idea which one to go for. My requirements are; HD for ease of use, small size, will be used for family outings only.

"it doesn't work with a Mac" relates to that iMovie doesn't edit MPEG2, this is also the case with the JVC. If anything the JVC is less standard, as it uses a different suffix for the files (.MOD).

Are there any HD camcorders that work with iMovie?

No, they all use MPEG2 (at least the SD ones do), which iMovie doesn't support.
