Sony HC39 E - Flip Out Screen Dead!

Hi

I took my 18 month old Sony HC39E on holiday with me last week. While using the camera, the flip out screen started to fade, then it suddenly went off completely. I now cannot use the screen at all. The strange thing is that the touch controls on the screen (although they cant be seen) do still work. I am thinking that it is some sort of micro switch that activates the screen when pulled open, that has gone faulty, but that is just a guess.

Anyone had a similar problem.

Cheers

Philip

Did you ever get A solution anywhere else to your problem as I now have the same issue. I can use the viewfinder with the flip out screen closed but this is a pain in the arse. There must be somewhere out there I can get a replacement screen surely?

Re: Sony HC39 E - Flip Out Screen Dead!

Hi

No, sorry. I never did receive any help on this one. I did a little searching around on the net, and found that this is a known issue with that particular model of camera. I noticed a fair few posts about it.
I was informed by one source that the issue lies with the ribbon cable connecting the screen to the main circuit board, and that the opening and closing of the screen put extra pressure on an already faulty cable.

My camera was fine one minute, then a few lines started to "streak' across the screen, then the whole screen seemed to have a brown/red cast to it, then it died.
I did take the screen housing and one side of the camera body off in order to see if wiggling the cable made the screen flicker on, but nothing. In fact it ended up with the camcorder not working at all, so I would not recommend doing this. In the end the camera ended up in the bin and I had to buy another.

I know this is not the answer you wanted...and it is not my preferred answer to give, but you either have to pay for a repair, or cut your losses.

Philip

Re: Sony HC39 E - Flip Out Screen Dead!

Thanks for the response. I don't think I'll pay for a repair as the Camcorder probably isn't worth an awful lot at the moment.

I'll be getting a new TV and DVD Recorder at the end of the year what with digital switchover occuring early next year. I'll see if I can haggle a few quid of a new one then.
