Hi looking to buy a High Def camcorder tha records to HDD, had been looking at the Sony SR1 but have seen that the SR5 is out, looked on the sony website and compared the two models but still not sure which is best to buy, price wise i can get the SR1 for £699 and the SR5 for £611, will be taking the kids holidays etc..

Any thoughts on which best, thank you

The SR5 is just out so haven't seen it or any reviews, but I would expect the performance to be very similar to the SR1.

The advantage of the SR5 is it is cheaper, and has a larger HDD.

The advantage of the SR1 is it has a manual focus ring and an external mic and headphone input.

For typical point and shoot in auto mode, I'd go with the SR5. If you want to use manual focus and an external mic, then SR1.

Out of interest, where did you get the £611? I fancy this camera myself but cheapest I've seen is around £650.

a shop called fotosound here in sunny Jersey, was surprised it was that cheap normally get my gear off the net since we get the vat taken off and is nornally alot cheaper than buying locally.

Would you mind posting your 1st thoughts on the SR5e? I am looking at either the SR5e or the SR7e but can't find any reviews on either of them.. Am guessing its because they're very new..

not had much chance to use it yet, however took it out the other evening with my youngest and filmed her running around the park and on the beach ,the wife gave it a go also, took some stills as well. Very simple to use the record and zoom button are nicely placed and the zoom is much smoother than the one on my old camcorder and the focusing was better as well.
Transfered the video straight to dvd in about 20 minutes, put it in my ps3 and wow what a picture very impressed and the sound was good as well.

Will need to get out a bit more with it to give it a better try out but can say that it was well worth the money, just one thing would have like a slightly bigger screen.

As for the stills printed some up to 8 x 6 and the were pretty good for a camcorder but have a sony R1 so will not be using it for stills much.
