Smile Lines across DV payback on different Camcorder

I have about 30 mini DV tapes that I took over the past 5 years with a JVC camcorder which always produced relatively good results. Playback through the JVC was never an issue.

As my JVC recently expired, I bought a Sony DCR-HC27 as a replacement. While playback of anything shot with the Sony is faultless, attempting to playback my older JVC tapes through the Sony produces a series of parallel greyscale lines running across the DV footage. The part of the film that you can see between the greyscale lines is perfect. As the tapes are in perfect order, I wonder of there is a setting issue. As these are family tapes, I need to find someway of resolving this issue.

Any assistance really appreciated.

Just a thought - the tapes weren't recorded in LP mode, were they? With LP mode you generally get problems playing them back on a different camcorder, due to the smaller margin of error on the tracking.

With SP mode it should work, if not I don't think there are any settings you can change.

Re: Lines across DV payback on different Camcorder

One thing I suggest you try is putting one of the JVC recorded tapes into the Sony and fast forwarding all the way to the end and then rewinding it. The lines could be due to the tape and heads not being fully aligned and this step should help to realign everything. It may be worth doing this a couple of times on each tape to get the best possible alignment.

Mark.
