Sony HDR-HC1E problems

Hi All,
I'm trying to transfer HD video (1080i) to Premiere Pro2 and have hit huge brick walls!! I have managed this in the past (only once) but the last few days are proving fruitless!! I understand that Adobe don't acknowledge that this machine exists (thanks Adobe!!) and that I don't get any preview on transfer (thanks yet again Adobe - fabulous software!!!) I've tried all settings that I can think of (iLink & DV/HDV settings on camera etc), plugging into another firewire port on card. I can control the camera from within Premiere, but it just won't record data to the computer. VERY frustrated. The thought of transferring all my tapes in DV format only is mightily depressing.

Anyone with any clever ideas/thought?

Re: Sony HDR-HC1E problems

I don't use Premiere, but the problems may be settings if it is expectng DV and getting HDV.

You could try free HDVsplit - it only captures HDV, so it's easier in that way.

Re: Sony HDR-HC1E problems

Are you sure that it is not capturing the HDVfootage? The only reason I ask is that when I use Premier Pro 2 to capture HDV on my laptop I don't get the preview either. I get a black screen in the capture preview window, so I use the monitor on my camera, HVR A1E.
When I go to my HDV capture file the footage is in there as an MPEG file. I then import it into Premier and the Source screen shows "Media Pending" in lots of different languages
When I bring the clip to the time line I get an "indexing" graphic in the bottom right corner of the screen like a timer bar. Once it finishes indexing it then "conforms" the file. As soon as the timer completes the footage becomes viewable in the edit window and I can work with it normally. I think this may be something to do with the fact that my laptop only has a 128mb graphics card and that Premier converts the footage in some way but I could be wrong.

Re: Sony HDR-HC1E problems

I've now solved this issue . . . . .

First apologies to both Adobe and Sony!!

I had 2 problems. First I uninstalled my all my Codec Mega packs. Appears when quized via Dr Watson 2 that I had LOTS!! of broken Codecs!!!! I uninstalled the lot. Also the tape I was trying to transfer into an HD Premiere template was recorded at DV (how very annoying to say the least).

I'm now transfering material happily (though still no preview or auto scene detect!!!) I have to view everything via the camcorders LCD.

Anyway - yet ANOTHER learning curve.

PS: Quality of HD transfers absolutely fantastic (compared to my old Sony Hi8)

Thanks for the previous suggestions

If you want preview and auto scene detect, give HDVsplit a try.

Re: Sony HDR-HC1E problems

Redsox,
Thanks for this link. I've already downloaded this and will try it tonight. It staggers me that a £1000 camera linked to software such as Premiere is so un-user friendly regarding auto scene detect & preview etc.

I've alot of tapes to transfer and I have to sit and manually start and stop just now. How sub-standard.

Re: Sony HDR-HC1E problems

You will find that used in conjunction with Avid Liquid 7, Sony Vegas ( and Movie Studio) as well as Premiere's own sibling Elements, It isn't so unfriendly. You get Preview ( though not scene detect) in the Vegas Family, Both in Liquid 6 ( with SP1) Avid liquid 7 and in Pinnacle 10/11 , you get preview , scene detect and can do a sort of scene detect after capture . ( not the same but you aren't stuck with one huge file)

Premieres HDV "philosophy" didn't seem to take its ( The HC1) presence into account initially. Having not used Premiere Pro with the FX1 I'm not sure how that compares
In this instance Edius HD is better geared for being HD friendly

This was a query well discussed at the annual Video Forum ( Earls Court) 2006

The Auto, DV , HDV issue is an inherent "side effect" of its ability to output DV, whether recorded as such or recorded as HDV and downconverted in-camera
Once you get the hang of it, it becomes rather easier to figure out

You may not need THIS

but the fact it exists makes a case for the fact that The HC1 is a lot more customisable then the manual would have you believe

You may want to have a play with CapDVHS in addition to HDV split. I think I linked it in another thread

Vegas 7 has HDV scene detection (6 does not).
