senu mark they still wont leave me alone

yes its the odd drop out i get on most tapes[sony premium],touch wood rarely more than one per tape, with my fx-7 and hc-1 which i use mostly for the pc work.the ones on camera recordings are easily edited out but hd drop outs[where the recording stops for a half a second or so] on a finalised edited recording are a pain as i then rerecord the film rather than leave the drop out.
i am reluctant to use head cleaners until a serious amount start showing up and as i have read of similar slight problems to mine.do you agree with my description of a hdv drop out.chris

Chris,

Not sure if I fully follow you... a "dropout" is a problem on the tape, so you will experience it when you play the tape... and when you capture the tape that dropout will be part of the capture.

This is different than dropped frames, where the PC was not able to keep up with the rate of capture, so it dropped some frames on the floor.

If you are getting dropouts on the tape you've been unlucky... you could try HDV quality tapes and see if that works better.

If you are seeing dropped frames then you need to look on your PC – end uneccessary programs, defrag your HDD, etc.

mark the drop outs[hdv ones are different to normal dv]that i mention are on the tapes they show up as i explained and show on tv replay as well.
on camcorder recordings out and about the pc will capture any drop that happens to be on the recordings but they can be edited out while making the film.as i said if one happens on a edited film that has been put back on tape it meens rerecording the film.the problem is with the tapes but personaly hdv tapes are too expensive so i will cary on as usual for now.
of note if there is a drop out while capturing it does not show up as a dropped frame on the computer reading.chris

Ok - so you are seeing dropouts then. Only advice I can give is to clean the heads and/or change type of tape.

Cant think of any thing better too

Done pragmatically, cleaning the tape head isn't a bad practice

Im puzzled as I also use the Sony Premium tapes with HC1 and FX1.. I truly find dropouts to be rare .. I would have thought, suspect tape but I imagine you've sourced them from different places
I a little wary to suggest you actually get the HDV ones for comparison but it is begining to look like an option
