Streaming .avi files on PC to 360

Hi,

Just set this up, but the majority of my videos are in .avi format. The 360 doesn't support this file type.

I am using Windows XP, not media center, which apparently makes things harder.

Is the best bet to buy an .avi to supported file format (mp4) and convert every single one of the files? I am using Zune on my PC to play the files and have got some video, all pictures and music to play fine. The supported file formats are: .wmv, .mp4, .m4v, .m4b, and .mov.

Anyone else got round this little problem?

Rob

Hi Rob,

I have just been looking into this for a friend and have found this information so far at; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...tepbyStep.aspx

There are other links from that page which also might help. If it all works on his 360 set up then I will purchase a 360 for myself and eventually use it as a media centre extender... I am yet to try it out but if you get to try first then let me know please !!!!

Cheers

Hi mate,

Thanks for posting. I use Zune, which is similar to Media Player 11, but allows you to share video and pics as well as music. The problem is it won't play dixv files (i.e. .avi files). The formats it supports are the ones above mate. I think I need to purchase a converter and just convert any videos I want to watch to .wmv files and it will play them fine. It's just gonna be time consuming, but worth it.

Just wondered if there an easier way, good luck setting yours up mate. Should be easier if you have Media Center rather than just XP SP2.

Got it! Using the Zune software it will not playback the DIVX files!?!?!? So will your DIVX files playback in Media Player?? How are you findingthe Zune otherwise? I guess you got it from the states?? Still haven't had a chance to try out my mates Xbox playback yet, hopefully it will not be too painful to set up!!
