i have a sony handycam DCR-IP55E and would like to run it off a large 12v battery just like a car battery with the same ciggerete connector. is this possible

I would say yes , but it depends on the type of socket on the camcorder . You can get all sorts of cables to reduce from 12v to various voltages [Nokia phone chargers for instance 5v] . What sort of connector does it have ?? and what voltage is the exterior supply ??

the dc input from the charger is 8.4V

You can buy adapters with varying voltages , 3.5v ,6v ,9v etc .Maplin may be a good place to look .I'll check out there catalogue for you in the meantime.

i got one from jessops for my dcr 100e, came with my home charger ( 49.99)

I would say you are looking for something like this :-

but you should talk to Keenes - they have quite a range like this and you need to ask them for one which fits your camera and gives the correct voltage.

Or if your camcorder has a power input socket you may be able to use something like this :-

If your charger voltage is 8.4 Volts that propably means you have a 7.2 Volt battery and your camcorder would be very happy with the 7.5 volt option.
