Re: Vegas 7e AVCHD update is available

I don't have an AVCHD cam but I was curious, so I tried 7.0e with some AVCHD clips I downloaded. On my core duo laptop the editing performance was good - similar to editing HDV. Editing was reponsive and I could preview simple edits at full rate.

Not an exhaustive test.. but does seem that editing native AVCHD is possible with decent performance (if you have a fairly powerful PC).

I guess our old(er) PCs will have to look on in envy.
I dont have AVCHD yet too but I must say Vegas seems to edit HDV with more fluidity on non " state of the art" systems than even Adobe Premiere Elements 3
It would seem though that most modern ( 6-8 month) mid range systems would be powerful enough
Where did you get the clips off?

Clips came from here (scroll to the table at the bottom of the page)
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...9/zooma268.htm

I just downloaded the 2 HQ+ .mt2s files (and put several copies on the timeline to play with).

Re: Vegas 7e AVCHD update is available

An important note for Panasonic AVCHD camcorder owners: The AVCHD support in Vegas 7.0e only works for Sony camcorders, not Panasonic!

This surprises me as I thought AVCHD was an agreed standard, but it seems there is some variation in Panasonic's implementation.

There are some Panasonic SD1 clips here... I've tried them with Vegas 7.0e and Vegas refuses to accept them.

Is this a strategic move by Sony, to purposely only support Sony camcorders?

I hope not seeing as Vegas is not used only by owners of Sony camcorders and they are partners in the fragile BD alliance.
Maybe Ver 8 will sort that one out
I also thought the AVCHD standard was .. *ahem* standard.. It makes you wonder if the Ulead and Pinnacle software will not be similarly fussy

Re: Vegas 7e AVCHD update is available

Interesting article here on Vegas 7.0e and Ulead Video Studio 11 and AVCHD support:

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content...ng-Is-Here.htm

3 things I found interesting:

1. Video studio supports all flavours of AVCHD "UVS 11 supports all camcorders that support AVCHD today"

2. It seems Vegas will eventually support all AVCHD models. I expect that the July release of Vegas MSP may do this.
"Panasonic and Sony AVCHD differ slightly," according to Matthew Brohn, Product Manager, Sony Creative Software, Inc. "With such a new technology, we choose to ensure that the Sony AVCHD workflow meets specification as soon as possible." Sony claims support for AVCHD Panasonic camcorders is still in development, but will be available soon.

3. Some nice words at the end about Vegas....

Re: Vegas 7e AVCHD update is available

Just to let you guys know. I edited 35mins worth of AVCHD recordings, it took my PC 11 hours to render (used the highest settings and all the surround channels, and a simple fading transition between scenes, WMV V9 8Mbps HD 1080-30p, 5.1 surround). The result is great and during editing the PC was very responsive, with draging and dropping clips etc, during editing Vegas was consuming around 1.5Gb, the project consisted of 13 clips. During rendering Vegas consumed 2.1Gb.

The only thing I'm missing is the ability to render to another AVCHD file.
By the way what format do you guys suggest to render to, when you want to watch the footage in best possible quality on a large LCD?

I guess you are going to play from a PC?
WMV is a good choice. Or you could render to HDV format.

Re: Vegas 7e AVCHD update is available

Yes I play it from my HTPC.

I've found a bug in Vegas, when I load a number of "small" clips everything is OK, when I load a "big" one 3.4G (+/- 30mins worth of data) then Vegas seems to choke. First it doesn;t recognize the last half of the loaded clip (red window), then it fills the memory and finally swaps data to the HD (used +/- 2.5 Gig of mem) and then is completely stuck. With my previous edit I had a load of small clips and had no problems. I played the clip as well with the motion picture browser with no problems.
This weekend I'll try another big clip and see if it has the same effect.
