Transferring from Sony DCR-HC22E - HELP

Hi - please help
I'm new to this forum so apologies if I'm going over something that has already been sorted (I've had a look around and couldn't see anything).
A
nyway, I have a problem that has been driving me insane for months.

This should be simple.
I have a Sony DCR-HC22E.
I want to move the contents of the dv on to my PC and then edit and burn back on to DVD.
The camcorder is connected via Firewire (this all seems to be OK, the PC knows it is there).
As soon as I go to capture from the device (I've tried the windows moviemaker, Ulead and at least one other - Pinacle I think) I get about three seconds in and the whole thing freezes and then crashes. It brings the whole PC to a grinding halt and it takes ages to close down the programme (which is usually not responding).
I'm not much of a techie, so when the local PC shop built my pc I told them what I was going to use it for and they put it together (this was one of the things I mentioned).

As far as I can tell I've got:
ASUS A8V-MX motherboard
AMP Athlon 64 3200+ processor
VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP graphics card
960mb Ram
Two hard drives (160 gig C drive where the operating system sits - 146 gig free and 120 gig D drive where are store all my pictures/music - 115 gig free). I point the software at the D drive for saving the downloaded film.

I've tried updating drivers, using usb instead of firewire, using other software programmes but can't seem to sort it out.

Can someone please give me some advice???

Thanks

Neil

Re: Transferring from Sony DCR-HC22E - HELP

I can't help other than to say your PC spec is fine, and you seem to be doing everything right. Capturing to a different drive then your system drive (as you are doing), whilst not mandatory, is good practice. Stick with Firewire - I don't believe you can capture DV via USB with the HC22.

Some things you could try to narrow the problem down:

- try a different firewire cable
- try a different camcorder (e.g. if you can borrow one)
- try and capture from your HC22 to another PC

Problem could be with the cable, or with the firewire card on the PC, or the firewire port on the camcorder.... or ??
