PC Software

I have just purchased a Panasonic NV-GS17 camcorder for basic filming, holidays, kids birthdays etc. It does not come with either a USB cable or software. I presume I can use one of the many cables I already have for cameras, Sat Nav, etc but what about the software. I only want to be able to burn the video footage to a DVD, I have a DVD burner attached to my PC. Any suggestion please preferably free or cheap! The instruction book refers to MotionDV Studio 5.3E LE.

Thanks

Re: PC Software

Hi you will need a firewire cable and you need firewire on your pc. if you have'nt already got it you will need to purchase and install a firewire card not very expensive ,Once you have that you can initially Capture to your pc via windows movie maker which you will have if you are running XP. Alas you cannot burn to dvd direct from WMM but you can export and burn with Nero or this freebie http://www.videodvdmaker.com/. Be warned you willhave largr files 1 hour tape will be 13GB on your pc

Re: PC Software

As stated by jaymac connecting your camcorder to PC is best done via a firewire (aka iLink, DV port, ieee1394) connection. The vast majority of software for editing will work best (and some only) with firewire for capture.
However your camcorder should have been supplied with the MotionDV Studio 5.3E LE software that is designed to capture the footage via USB. In most cases camcorders are also supplied with USB and analogue video/audio leads so it looks like you didn't get everything that should have been in the box. The manual should list what should have been in there. If bought new and things were missing then I suggest you go back to where it was purchased and get the missing items. If bought second hand then the chances are you can download the software from the Panasonic site and finding a USB (but still suggest you go for firewire) lead to get the footage onto your PC should be easy enough.

Re: PC Software

The GS17 doesn't come with a USB cable or the MotionDV software.

As stated on This web site:
Quote:
The MotionDV STUDIO 5.3 LE video editing software provided simplifies the editing of video footage on the PC
But if it is not listed in the manual as being supplied then the chances are you have to get hold of it yourself, perhaps by downloading it from the Panasonic web site

Mark.

edit: Nope, just checked and the Panny site doesn't have any software downloads for the GS17 - just the manual.

Re: PC Software

In the Panasonic "Operating Instructions For PC Connection" supplied with the GS17, it says

Names and functions of
packaged items

1) USB connection cable (NV-GS17: not
supplied):
≥This cable is used to connect a personal
computer with your movie camera.

2) CD-ROM (NV-GS21/17: not supplied):
MotionDV STUDIO 5.3E LE (l 9)
Video Stream Driver (l 10)
USB Driver (l 11)
Acrobat Reader
DirectX

I don't think the software is available for download either.

Re: PC Software

OP here. I have got Nero as part of my DVD burner, but can I connect my camcorder by ANY USB cable or does it need to be the Panasonic one? What is the 'component' that is around the cable at small USB end?

See http://www.memoryforless.co.uk/store/erol.html#1X0

Cheers

John

Any cable that has the correct connections on each end will do the job. I would guess the Panasonic cable is likely to be more expensive than an unbranded cable but both should do the job.

As a guess I would say 'the component' you are talking about is a ferrite core that is on the cable to help to illiminate interference that cables can pick up. Chances are a cheaper/unbranded cable wont have this but probably isn't required in most cases. Just keep it away from other cables such as power etc.

Re: PC Software

I have a Panny GS-NV11 , great little camcorder . I use a firewire card to transfer to PC .I bought my card from that well known auction site , comes with a cable and software .I have the software disk that came with my NV-11 ,have never used it and you would be welcome to a copy .It has a version of MotionDV STUDIO on it together with other drivers .Before anyone says copying is piracy ,seen as you would of had this disk when you bought your camcorder , it would be classed as a backup copy .
