audio in pro

i have been assembling a slideshow in a mates premiere pro2,the problem is the sound,i have ended up with 5 or 6 audio timlines open due to various sound effects/music not working in certain timelines.
i have the main music on 1 and sound effects at various points on the next couple of timlines but i have to open new lines as some new added sound effects don't work on say line 2&3 but works on 4.
then a playing a peice of music it will disappear part way through, but if i cut it at that point and drag the cut quiet part to another timeline it then plays, so if i keep them lined up the piece now plays all the way through, anybody know why.
