Capturing High Res Images from DVD?

Unsure if I'm posting this query in the right forum so apologies if not

I'm looking to have some prints done of certain scenes from some of my favourite films to hang in my house & need fairly high resolution images to start from in order to make the prints look decent at the size I'm after.

I've taken screen captures of standard def DVD's running on my computer but obviously the best (non-scaled) image I can get is at a resolution of 720 or so pixels wide with a height relative to that, which just isn't big enough.

If I were to play a high def DVD (either HD or Blu Ray) through my computer at, say, a resolution of 1680 x 1050 & take a screen cap of that, then would I be right in thinking that I'd end up with a much better quality image than if I were to do the same when running a standard def DVD on the same computer at the same resolution?

If not, & I'm just talking complete nonsense, then can anyone suggest any other methods for getting a high resolution (at least 1600 pixels in width) image from a film?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Capturing High Res Images from DVD?

You are right in thinking you will get a higher res Image from HD DVD / BD

How this translates to what size you want in print is rather much harder to predict. Even from Hi def sources You will probably not get more than the equivalent of 2-2.5 megapixels in digital still terms

You can of course resize images in software (Photoshop) by interploation although
Geniune fractals is much better ( costlier too esp for one off use)
