I'd recopmmend you future-proof yourself (as much as is possible) and go for an HD camcorder. Take a look at the Sony HDR-HC7E. You can get this for around £820 which means you'll have budget for a few accessories (eg teleconvertor and widescreen lens adaptors).

If you are "semi professional", I assume you are going to be editing your footage. If so, then I don't think the media matters. HDV models (like the HC7) record to miniDv tapes.

DVD models are appealing if you don't want to edit, as you can simply shoot and play the DVD. (You can edit as well).

HDD cams appeal because of the lack of needing to buy media, but of course you need to back the material up somewhere. HDD cams also allow you to do simple editing on the camcorder.

The HC7 is a consumer model, but very good. Just about all the professional models record to tape; there are some exceptions (like a £4000 Panasonic model which records to solid state memory).

Re: Best camcorder

I would recomend the Canon HV20 for a variety of reasons - full manual control over shutter speed, aperture, ability to disable gain, true 25p (24p) recording mode with (or without) A1 cine preset.

Just my 2p worth

Re: Best camcorder

Hello.

Im currently shopping for a video camera to buy. Im going to being going to university to study media production in hopes of being qualified to be a camera man / video editor. I need to make a portfolio and need a camera. I have a few ideas for my portfolio, for example im into music so i will do some music vids / documentrys on the local scene and im into skateboarding so i might make a skate video. With this in mind i will need a camera to have good quality in poor light and have a good picture whilst on the move and also be afordable.

I have a few examples of cameras:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/5632363.htm

Im looking to spend no more then £500 and i would like it to be digital so i can put what ive recorded onto my computer to edit it and one that would last me awhile so as i get better there is no need for me to get a better camera untill i get alot better. Is the camera ive seen already and good and would it fit my needs well? what do i need to look for in a camera and are there any you can recommend?

Thanks for your time

Lee
