camcorder -> capture -> save with lossless codec instead of DV codec

hey,
when capturing video from my camcorder with ScenalyzorLive the video is saved with DV video and PCM audio --> too much file size for my HDD
that's why i'm looking for a software that can capture video from a camcorder and save the file with lossless video and audio codecs or with codecs of my choice

hope you guys can help me...thanks!

Re: camcorder -> capture -> save with lossless codec instead of DV codec

DV-AVI is a lossless format as the files will be more or less an exact 100% quality copy of what is on the camcorder tape. Therefore whatever format you save the video in it will eat up this amount of space (~13Gb per hour) or be reduced in size and quality. Most capture software can capture the file to MPEG-2 format which is the same as used on a DVD. So if the video is going to be put on DVD this should not be a problem, but it does make life more difficault if you want to edit the video.

A search of this forum will bring up a list of the most popular programs if you decide to change to something else.

Mark.

Re: camcorder -> capture -> save with lossless codec instead of DV codec

You could do even worse with saving to a "Windows" ( uncompressed) AVI .
Which takes up 40Gb per hr of video and is not nessesarily of better quality.
Furthermore It is hard to "manipulate on most modest systems . It is lossless

As Mark as stated DV AVI is the best "lossless" format for your money. It retains quality after several re renders and unlike Mpegs does not suffer from generational loss from re rendering

There are software ( eg Canopus Procoder 2) which can encode, transcode any video format to virtually any other but in order to benefit from it you have to be aware of the limitations of the various Formats and codecs

You are best off manually encoding the DV AVI to any other format (ie Mpeg4) knowingly you wont be editing it etc
