I have read reviews of the Sony DCR-HC47E and seen it in the flesh - it looks and feels the business so I plan to get one. On Amazon.co.uk they have the DCR-HC47 for sale. Is this the same as the HC47E or is there some subtle (or major) difference? Amazon are no help and I cannot find out from searche engines. Can anyone help?

Yes, it is the same. The "E" simply designates that it is the European model, any HC47 you get in the UK should be the "E", they just don't always give the full model number. Amazon doesn't sell imported stock.

Actually if you look in the detail, Amazon lists the model as:

Item model number: DCRHC47E.CEH

Not sure what the CEH means, but the E is there....

I am considering buying a HC47 but have not been able to find many reviews. I have found one OK review of the US version (HC48 - here: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content...ons-Review.htm) and there are a few user reviews on Amazon but thats it...
