This is a well known problem with many makes of camcorder & digital stills cameras that use the Sony CCD's from a few years back. There is a very long thread on this problem with Canon camcorders Here. Any camcorders/cameras with this type of problem should be repaired free of charge regardless of who made it, but only for a limited time.
