Help with Photo Story 3

I'm not sure if this is the right forum. I have just started using Photo Story 3 to make a slide show from my digital pictures. The Help section says that I can add a "Title Page" but doesn't explain how to do it. It gives an in-depth explanition on how to edit each picture title, but not how to add the Title Page. I created one in word, scanned it into the computer, then added it as picture. It doesn't look that great.
I asked this question on another web site and was told to make my title page as a jpeg using Power Point. I am not that computer savey and am not sure how to do that. I would like to be able to make the page using Photo Story.
Thanks

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

Do you have Publisher installed along with Word ? If so, you can select to save a Publisher doc as a jpeg (picture file). It may come out better.

You may be able to but that may be one of its weak areas and it may not be in your interest not to explore easily available alternatives
Power Point is relatively easy to suss out
It has different templates: chose one do the text , than save as Jpeg
Give it a go and post back when you get stuck

I often make Slide shows with music , transitions and motion in Proshow Gold. although it can do titles I find that it is much easier to make a nicer one in Powerpoint with very little effort.

Publisher is equally easy to use and has been suggested, it equally possible to save its output as a jpeg for use in Photo story

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

Thanks for the advice. I am only a novice computer user so how do I find out if I have publisher with word? Also, I don't think that I have Power Point. In my program list it says "powerpoint viewer". Is that the same as power point?

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

As the name suggests 'Powerpoint Viewer' is a free program that can be used to view existing Powerpoint presentations, but not create new ones.
MS Publisher is a program included as part of the MS Office SBE (Small Buisness Edition) or needs to be bought seperately, so I would say there is a fair chance you don't have it.

If you need help with getting the best out of Photo Story 3 then have a look at This web site. I normally point users to this site that want to work out how to use Movie Maker (video editing) but it covers both programs. If you can add a title page from within the program then I'm sure this site will tell you how.

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

http://www.papajohn.org/PS3-Titles.html will take you direct to the instructions for adding a title page

If you still can't get what you want done then e-mail me the Word document and I'll open it in Publisher and save it again as a .jpg picture that you can then add into PS3.

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

Mark,
Thanks for the help. The second link you provided answered my question. I did not know the title page was over a picture. I wanted it to look like a written page. I know we can make a Power Point presentation at work, so I'll have someone do it there.
Maybe you can answer another question for me. When I play my Cannon Elura Digital movie camera directly on my widescreen TV the picture is very clear. When I download the video to my laptop using Windows Movie Maker and make a DVD is looses a lot of quality. The is a noticable diference between both pictures. Someone at work said that Movie Maker is not good for making DVDs. Do you know if that is true?
Thanks

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

Let me guess - you are connecting the camcorder to your PC via the USB cable. If so then you wont ever get the best quality capture. You need to use firewire to get a 100% quality capture of the video onto a PC. Also you may well be capturing the video direct to the highly compressed .WMV format. You should set MM2 to capture to the .AVI format which is the same as written to miniDV tapes by the camcorder and therefore there is no loss of quality.
You say you are using Movie Maker to make a DVD, but MM2 can't create output to a disc. Therefore you must be using other software to create a disc.

I suggest that to keep this thread on topic you post any further question re the camcorder in another thread in the Camcorder and video editing forum. This will also have the advantage of more people who know about editing seeing the thread.

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

Mark,
I am using a FireWire Cable, but you are correct about the WMV format. I will try to change the capture format. I am using Sonic to burn the DVD. Right now I am going to finish my Photo Story 3 project. When I tackle the movie project I'll post on the Camcorder Forum if I have problems.
Thanks,
Norman

Re: Help with Photo Story 3

I went to the help section of Windows Movie Maker. It said that the recomended capture setting to either view on the computer, or to edit and record to a video CD is the WMV setting. That is what I originally did. Your recomendation is to capture using the DV-AVI format. That will give me better quality, correct?
Also, what is the diference between a video CD and a DVD?
Thanks

Absolutely
DV AVI is the least compressed and for all practical purposes what is on the DV tape. It is possible but very difficult to degrade its PQ by normal editing as it stands up very well to multiple re renders by still maintaining the near original quality.

Also, what is the diference between a video CD and a DVD?
The answer lies in what happens when you've finished editing the AVI.

A Video CD is a video format in which the video ends up on a CD not a DVD. It is popular in the Indian subcontinent, West Africa and the far East where there are VCD players ( which cannot play DVD).
Its IQ is better than VHS but not by much.
DVD is what you are used to here " the sort you get from blockbusters
DVD at best quality will only fill 1 hr at 4.7Gb , unlike Video CD at 700Mb
This means that compared to DVD , the amount of data used to make a VCD is less than 1/5th
As such, VCD video is more compressed.
VCD uses mpeg1 video file format while DVD uses mpeg2 ( much less compressed.
The affordability of DVD blank media and Recording drives means there is no cost advantage in trying to make a VCD whose image quality is far less than with a DVD
Most DVD players can play a VCD and PCs will usually play them anyway
