Re: best way of hosting clips for forum members

I would have said You tube but there is a feeling around the forums about linking to external sites which may be detrimental to the growth of this one., and bandwith issues. I guess its worth bringing up
Previous clips have been hosted at FTP sites where interested people have downloaded and watched then rather than being streamed

Re: best way of hosting clips for forum members

As soon as I have any info ill let you know

As stated above What i have seen from previous examples is that if you have access to an FTP server sites /address you can link to it and people can then download the samples and play them.

This is not the same as using a service like You tube where they would be streamed at low quality

Anybody know examples of FTP sites which will permit upload video files and allow access to them pls

If your ISP offers web space, that is one way. That is how I do it - with my monthly broadband subscription I get 100 MB of space, which I can use as I like. I can put short clips there.

Do a google search with "free webspace" and you'll find lots of hits...

Here is one such link
http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/freew...FQ5GEAod9UlBjw

Never used this or similar so can't recommend or not....

Re: best way of hosting clips for forum members

Thanks Mark the linked example looks fine , I would just read the T & C ( fine print) to be sure there is no catch.

The suggestion of your own ISP sounds quite attractive too ( if they offer it) as the mpeg4 files from the Sanyo VPC CG6 are unlikely to be that big and as you are an existing customer it wont require any new transaction: only the uploading software and the way to link to your webspace on it

Re: best way of hosting clips for forum members

Yes, to use your own ISP (or probably other hosting solutions) you need a FTP client. I use one called "Hummingbird" that I got through work, but there are also various free ones. They basically look like windows explorer but work on the remote system. Your ISP will tell you the URL to use to reach your home directory, e.g. http://isp.yourid.com. They will also tell you the FTP address (e.g. ftp:..isp.yourid.com). You don't need to create fancy web pages (though you can if you want). E.g. I created a video directly and just copied a clip in there

Re: best way of hosting clips for forum members

For a free (for non commercial use) FTP program try http://www.smartftp.com/

Easy to use, just drag and drop as you would with windows explorer on your PC, but uploads it to the remote ISP space.

Cant get much easier than that to upload stuff
