Best Value MiniDV Tape?

Hi All,

Bought a camcorder yesterday which was a bit of an impulse buy really. JVC's GR-D390EK which is on Amazon for £175. Can't be bad. Surely.

Anyways, I'm struggling to find JVC tapes for a decent price. Do I *have* to use JVC tapes as the manual suggests? Will a Sony tape not be as good (in a JVC product)?

And please, pleasepleaseplease, could you recommend me a good value tape that I'll be recording drunken nights and a snowboarding holiday on? Cheaper the better, but not to sacrifice quality.

Thanks to anyone that could help!

Re: Best Value MiniDV Tape?

You do not have to buy JVCs tapes . I have a knockabout JVC miniDV camcorder which (along with 2 other Sony HDV camcorders), I use the Sony Premium tapes with.

Never had any problems with them
Offers seem to be on that tape from time to time at Amazon ( a recent thread on that Here)

Incidentally I have used JVC tapes with no problems but I don't think any of the brands is special even though I have mainly used the Sony tapes for more than 5 years

What I would advise against is mixing tape brands ( and types) as it used to be a rather fast way of permanently damaging your camcorders tape head.
I suspect it is not so much of a problem now but I wouldn't personally want to find out.. the hard way
Buy whichever you wish .. and as much as possible stick with it

Re: Best Value MiniDV Tape?

The problem with buying tapes (or anything for that matter) from Costco is that they have a nasty habbit of changing the items they sell at an alarming rate, so you 'might' not be able to get them for too much longer (or they just might keep selling them 'til hell freezes over ). If you can't get the tapes at a decent price from anywhere else then you may well be better off playing it safe and getting the Sony tapes (or whatever make) and sticking with them.

Mark.
