Best format for youtube vids?

Guys,

I've got some .avi footage from my fuji F11 camera that I wish to put on youtube. When I upload the 20Mb .avi file to youtube the quality is dreadful.

On my PC the picture is pin sharp so i'm guessing youtube dumb downs the quality.

What are the best settings for video files to play on youtube ?

What software should I use to get the footage into the best format ?

TIA,
MJW.

Re: Best format for youtube vids?

Have a quick read

Help Required Compressing For Youtube

Video on youtube ?

As for software, there are standalone video converting software or Any mainstream video editing software ( which accepts this input) should be able to output to any of the formats you wish to try

The AVI from the FujiF11 may be an mjpeg or Divx?xvid/Mp4 with an AVI "wrapper" .
Although it may look good on your PC, it is more than likely already quite compressed compared to even mpeg2 or DV AVI.
As such it is often very hard to re-compress these files even further without loss of quality

Re: Best format for youtube vids?

Well I tried using windows movie maker to save the footage as mpeg - have tyo say the results were still ok on my PC but again much worse on youtube.

Youtube must be compressing footage to death at their end

Any other ideas on how to best solve this problem ?

What do other people use to get their avi files in the best shape for youtube ?

Re: Best format for youtube vids?

WMM is not particularly good at making anything other than wmv and turning DV AVI back to DV AVI

To have a lot more control over conversion re : size vs quality: Canopus Procoder ( costly) or Express are very capable video conversion software as is TMPEGenc

I dont know what others use ..

PM me if you have any difficulty getting Conversion software I may have some on a CD somewhere in my cluttered study

Re: Best format for youtube vids?

Digital Video (UK) magazine is running a feature on You Tube this month. I got one last evening at Tescos, just leaving through it now

You can of course browse through it a your newsagents , if it catches your fancy then buy it.
Helpfully, the cover disc seemsto have some "Youtube related" software which may be all you need.

I would buy it £5.99 for the info and software.

If you do find it isnt what you want do PM me : the offer still remains open

Re: Best format for youtube vids?

It's all very easy, the format suggested on the youtube site is 320 x 240 ie the max res youtube will give unfortunatly. I use Jet audio 6.2 for converting to xvid format and 128k mp3 sound etc..

It would be great to have better res and stereo sound as an option but can't see how this will happen for now anyway ??
