Exclamation JVC Mini-DV Cam & Firewire

Hi

I'm new at camcorders, and I seem to have a major problem.

For some strange reason I cant get my JVC GR-D340EK to talk to my computer via Firewire. My Firewire works fine (as evident by my ipod working on all the ports), however XP just fails to simply find it attached!

I've been over my system with a fine tooth comb and simply cant find the problem.

System Info:

Athlon 3000+ Palmero
1Gb RAM
180Gb HDD (Primary)
300Gb HDD (Secondary)
3 Port PCI Firewire card

And of course the offending hardware is a JVC GR-D340EK.

I've tried everything I can think of..... stuck it in play mode (of course), power up while plugged in, etc etc.

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Re: JVC Mini-DV Cam & Firewire

I've been all through the menu's and there isnt a DV out setting.

I must say the manual is a complete joke, as is JVC customer care.

Their response was tantamount to "Not our problem!"

I must say that if I cant get the damn thing working it will be going back as faulty!

If its under warrantee , and you can eliminate the cable as the cause ( which isnt what your ipod uses) then send it back

You could actually get a firewire ipod cable.

Re: JVC Mini-DV Cam & Firewire

I use a 6 pin to iPod connector cable for my iPod and I use a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire (IEEE 1394) cable for my camera.

Cable is okay (it was brand new) so its either camera or OS.

New cables can be faulty though ( I've had one)

You are going to need to play sleuth:
If the camcorder and cable work with another PC: Windows is at most likely fault if the firewire card can be trusted but since your ipod is seen that seems less likely. Unless
You need to try another pc and another cable to narrow down the fault as
it could be PC: Firewire Card or Windows
camcorder
or cable
If you are really unlucky it may be more than one( very unlikely)

Thanks ,
What I meant though was that the camcorder didnt share exact same firewire cable with the ipod
as we know ipod probably has a proprietary interface

I'll give another cable a try, if it still doesnt work its going to be returned as faulty.

Do have a go on another PC though. Despite my reading about and being aware of problems with firewire IMHO they are not an everyday occurrence as posts to these forums might suggest.Saying that, it does seem firewire is a bit more troublesome than USB

These problems are however a real right PITA when they occur and because cards ,cables and computers OS can be at fault, It is sad that camcorder manufacturers attitudes don't help much to give you confidence in the robustness of camcorders in this respect

Thumbs up Re: JVC Mini-DV Cam & Firewire

Turned out to be the damn cable!

I bought a gold firewire cable kit (you get a 6 pin to 6 pin cable with two 6to4 pin adapters). Only cost £8.97 from Asda as well.

Plugged it in and................ BERLING. Windows has found new Hardware.

Picked it up, and now not a single prob! All singing and all dancing DV Cam :D

Cheers for the help all!
